An Important “Claimer”

What follows was written by Brother Aaron Powner and his brother Jim Powner when Words of Plainness was first published. It remains the founding posture of this ministry.

The word “disclaimer” is such a strange term to use. It means that you claim that you do not claim something. To disclaim is not the intent of this publication. We intend to both claim and proclaim our faith, practices, beliefs, and experiences as followers of Jesus Christ in the Latter-day Saint tradition.

We are regular, every-day followers of the Latter-day Saint faith. Not being guiding officers of the Church to which we have united ourselves, we humbly acknowledge that the views expressed in this publication do not necessarily reflect the official doctrines, policies, or practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or its officials.

We are, however, properly ordained elders in the lay-priesthood of our local congregations. “We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ… that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” (2 Nephi 25:26) We labor to honor the commitment we have made to “the work of the ministry” even to “stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things.” (Ephesians 4:12; Mosiah 18:9) Our words do carry the weight of personal conviction and the authenticity of individual experiences. We hope you will find within these pages something of value.

What follows below is the legal and administrative companion to that claim—the specific boundaries, trademarks, and terms under which this ministry operates.

About This Ministry

Words of Plainness is operated by Aaron Powner Publishing, a sole proprietorship operated from the State of Utah. Brother Aaron Powner serves as Ministering Elder and Chief Author of this ministry, with editorial contribution from his brother Jim Powner. Brother Aaron is an ordained Elder and a member in good standing of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Everything he writes and publishes here is offered in his personal capacity as a disciple of Jesus Christ—not in any ecclesiastical office of the Church.

This ministry is not a church, a congregation, a branch, or an authorized organization of any denomination. It is a private publishing and outreach effort grounded in one man’s effort to bear witness of Jesus Christ plainly to anyone who is listening.

Relationship to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Words of Plainness is not affiliated with, authorized by, endorsed by, sponsored by, or produced in cooperation with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or any of its affiliated entities. Brother Aaron is a member of the Church. He is not a General Authority, General Officer, stake or mission president, bishop, branch president, or any other presiding ecclesiastical leader. He holds no calling that grants him authority to represent the Church, speak on its behalf, or announce doctrine or policy for it.

He does not claim—and has never claimed—to receive revelation for the Church, to establish new doctrine, to set or interpret official policy, or to correct or supplement the teachings of its authorized leaders. Anything written or spoken here that touches Latter-day Saint belief reflects his personal study, personal testimony, and faithful engagement with the scriptures and teachings of the Church—nothing more.

Authority and Doctrine

The views expressed on this website—in chapters, reflections, audio narrations, music, posts, and community responses—are personal. They represent Brother Aaron’s sincere attempt to testify of Jesus Christ and to help seekers from any background encounter Him, but they are not official doctrine of any church or denomination.

For the official teachings, policies, and positions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, please consult churchofjesuschrist.org/study and currently authorized publications of the Church. If anything written here appears to conflict with the teachings of the prophets and apostles whom the Lord has called to lead His restored Church, the teachings of those prophets and apostles are to be preferred.

Scripture and Sources

Every passage cited is attributed transparently throughout the site; see About Our Scriptural Sources for a fuller explanation of how scripture is used here.

A Word from Brother Aaron

I love the Church I belong to. I equally love the people who do not belong to it—whether they are seeking God or not. This ministry exists to stand in the common ground between them and say plainly what I have come to know of Jesus Christ.

But standing in common ground requires knowing where I stand—and where I do not. I do not stand in the office of any apostle, prophet, or presiding officer of the Church. I do not stand between you and the Savior. I do not stand over you as an authority on doctrine or policy. I stand beside you as a fellow disciple who has been asked to bear witness of what he has seen and heard.

This disclaimer is simply my attempt to say all of that plainly, so that nothing you find here is ever mistaken for what it is not.
